KWABRE EAST MUNICIPALITY BEGINS POLIO IMMUNIZATION

The MCE, Hon. Nana Osei Asibey Bonsu commended government for the efforts employed to stamp out the disease.

The Kwabre East Municipal Health Directorate have launched its Polio Immunization exercise on Thursday, September 10, 2020, at Dumanafo in the Ashanti Region, a suburb of Mamponteng, the Capital town of the Municipality.

The highly infectious viral disease that largely affects children under five years of age according to the Kwabre East Health Directorate is a ‘vaccine-derived polio type 2’, which was discovered in some parts of the country around the peak of COVID-19.

The virus transmitted by person-to-person spread mainly through the fecal-oral route or, less frequently, by a common vehicle (e.g. contaminated water or food) and multiplies in the intestine, from where it can invade the nervous system and cause paralysis hence the Ghanaian government’s interest in eradicating the disorder.

“We started recording the vaccine-derived polio type 2 cases around the peak of COVID-19,” Mr. Osei Somuah Samuel said.

“We have examined the corresponding vaccine to fight the disease from spreading. We are still studying the recent infection but we have to take preventive action to stop it from spreading.”

The Health Director disclosed that the Kwabre East Municipality has about 28,000 children under its care for immunization which begun on Thursday and ends on Sunday, September 13, 2020.

He pleaded to parents and guardians to involve their wards in the exercise to except them from the catastrophe.

“We have almost 28,000 children under our care in the Kwabre East Municipality and from today to Sunday, we expect mothers, fathers, and relatives to get their wards involved. This is a preventive measure for the welfare of the children and they cannot hesitate to be left out,” he said.

The Kwabre East Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Nana Osei Asibey Bonsu commended government for the efforts employed to stamp out the disease from newborns and entreated the whole of Ghana to be engaged in the immunization process to terminate polio for good.

He addressed that the future leaders of the country cannot continue to be obstructed by the highly infectious virus, which opposes their dreams and aspirations.

“Stronger and vibrant children later end in wheelchairs which is very disadvantageous to the health of the future leaders,” he told TheNewsGh.Com

“Government has taken steps in eradicating this infection after we were recently informed that there has been a spike in some parts of the country. One infection calls for the need to embark on the exercise in every part of the country to save the children.

“Children under 5 years of age are vaccinated in order to prevent contracting the disease.”

He informed that inhabitants must prepare to take part in the exercise, and pleaded to owners to tame their dogs to prevent bothering health personnel who will move from one house to the other to immunize the young ones.

“We are pleading to house owners who possess wild animals to tame them in order to ease the work of health personnels as they embark on their duty.

“This is a four-day exercise which will start from morning to evening,” he ended.
