OFFICIAL WORKING VISIT OF HER EXCELLENCY, PROF. JANE NAANA OPOKU-AGYEMANG, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF GHANA, TO THE MAMPONTENG MARKET PROJECT SITE.

On 29th September 2025, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, together with the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Municipal Chief Executive of Kwabre East, Hon. Joseph Amankwah, and other dignitaries, paid an official working visit to the Mamponteng Market Project site, which has remained abandoned since 2012.
During the visit, the Vice President and her entourage inspected the project and engaged with stakeholders, including traditional authorities, market women, and community leaders.
In his keynote address, Hon. Joseph Amankwah, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), recalled that the market project was originally awarded to High Brain Limited at a contract sum of GH₵ 8,841,032.00, with funding sourced from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF). The supervision of the project was entrusted to AB Consort Limited. Actual construction works commenced on 1st August 2012.
The scope of the project includes:A three-storey administration block,Four two-storey buildings containing 197 lockable shops,Two banks,188 market stalls,A supermarket with two warehouses,Toll booths,A daycare centre, among other facilities.
Unfortunately, due to inadequate funding, work stalled in 2013, and since then, no significant progress has been made.Hon. Amankwah emphasized that the long delay in completing the project has had severe socio-economic consequences on the people of Mamponteng and the Kwabre East Municipality. Many displaced traders are currently operating under unsafe conditions, including trading beneath high-tension electrical poles and along congested roadsides, thereby endangering lives. The situation has resulted in heavy traffic congestion on the main Mamponteng route and significantly reduced the Assembly’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF) from market activities. The abandoned site has regrettably turned into a haven for criminal activities, posing serious threats to safety and security within the central business district.
The MCE noted that once completed, the market project would:Generate over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs,Restore order and safety to the trading environment Improve revenue mobilization for the Assembly,Stimulate economic activities across the municipality,Stand as a testament to the NDC government’s commitment to local economic empowerment and infrastructural development.
He appealed for swift government intervention to ensure completion of the project, expressing optimism that under the leadership of President Mahama and Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, the project will be revived and completed to benefit the people.
Speaking at a durbar of chiefs and people of Mamponteng, the Vice President her Excellency Prof, Jane Opoku-Agyemang reiterated the government’s determination to modernize trading centres, describing markets as the “offices of women”, where countless families derive their daily livelihood.“We are here because of the market. The market is the office of women, and we are committed to making their office better and in good shape,” she emphasized.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged the long years of delay but gave firm assurance that resources would be mobilized to resume work without further delay.“Whether through the District Assemblies Common Fund or special funding mechanisms, we will lobby to get the resources to complete these projects. We started this market project long ago, and now that we are in power, we will work together to finish it. This project will not be abandoned again,” she assured.
She further called for unity and collective responsibility, urging the people of Mamponteng to rise above political differences in the interest of national development. Beyond the market project, the Vice President also addressed broader challenges in the municipality, stressing the need for continuous investment in education, youth development, and community well-being.
“One key concern is the education of our children. Whatever we need to do to bring them up well, we will do. If the market is in good shape, our women can work, sell, and provide for their families. That is why we are determined to complete this and other stalled projects across the country,” she noted.
Conclusion
The official visit reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reviving stalled infrastructure projects, particularly those with a direct impact on the livelihoods of ordinary Ghanaians. The Mamponteng Market project, once completed, will not only restore dignity to traders but also stimulate economic growth, job creation, and security in the Kwabre East Municipality.
